My Essential Oils Story

What REALLY sold me was buying my starter kit and using Pan Away on my broken toe. Though I’d only been using the oils for a couple of weeks, I hadn’t really seen any major changes in my life, and I wondered if they worked at all or if it was all just a joke, another direct sales scheme that would be a passing fad.

Shortly after I got my kit, I broke my little toe. (I was in a hectic frenzy that morning and should have been more careful NOT to kick the cat’s scratching post, but, oh well. You live, you learn, you break toes.) I went to work that morning, and when I came home and my toe had completely swollen to a painful purplish blue, I skeptically doused it in Pan Away and lavender oil. Why not? I figured. They’re here now; I might as well try them.

I wish you knew how much I don’t blow things like this out of proportion. I generally like to keep a level head about things. But when I applied a few drops of Pan Away and lavender to my toe, the bruising and pain immediately subsided. The swelling decreased, the bright blackish-purple faded to more of a lavender (how appropriate! and gross, sorry), and the terrible throbbing stopped. Admittedly, the pain didn’t disappear completely, but it was easily reduced by more than half.

The oils impressed me again when I got home from work one evening with terrible lower back pain. I have mild scoliosis, so I’m no stranger to occasional back aches. I asked my kind and loving husband to rub some Pan Away into my lower back, which he did obligingly (he’s awesome). Without thinking, I continued my normal evening routine of checking email, making dinner, finishing laundry, and putting dishes away. It didn’t even occur to me until about 30 minutes later that my back pain was gone. I’d spent all day at my desk, stealing frequent breaks in the office kitchen where I could get some real relief by doing some stretches that only helped in the moment. And here, all I’d done was let some Pan Away sink in, and the aching I’d felt all day was totally gone.

“My back doesn’t hurt anymore,” I said to my husband, surprised it’d worked at all. “The pain is completely gone!”

Since then, I’ve had my fair share of successes (and yes, a few unmet expectations) with the oils. I’ve found little bottles of love in peppermint, lavender, lemon, clary sage, Stress Away, and of course, Pan Away. They’ve helped me in so many ways. But I had to learn that they work differently for everybody. You may have to try a few different things before you find what works for you — after all, everyone’s body chemistry is different — but don’t give up on them.

In my case, my sugar addiction kept me craving unhealthy things — cookies, ice cream, fast food, soda — and so every time I wanted those things, I pursued them. Even though I had been using the oils for a few weeks, my skin was still breaking out, my digestion was still totally messed up, and my hormones? Don’t even get me started. I was ready to conquer the world one day and burn it all in a delightfully wicked cultural bonfire the next.

It wasn’t until I cleaned up my act and started making healthier choices that the oils started to have a greater impact for me personally. When that happened, I was able to share them with others without feeling like a fraud, too.
